Colcom Foundation Tracks Steep Decline in North American Birds

Few figures capture the toll of habitat loss as starkly as the ones cited by Colcom Foundation the North American bird population has fallen from roughly 10 billion to 7 billion over the past fifty years, a loss of 2.9 billion birds.

Wildlife Losses Mirror Population Growth

The foundation situates that decline within a broader pattern of habitat pressure tied to human population growth. Citing research from the Center for American Progress, Colcom Foundation notes that a large share of species listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as threatened or near threatened are seeing their numbers continue to fall, not stabilize.

The trend extends well beyond birds. Wild vertebrate animal populations have roughly halved during the same window in which the human population doubled, according to data the foundation cites from the World Wildlife Fund’s Living Planet report. Ten thousand years ago, wild animals made up 99% of vertebrate land animal weight on Earth. Today, that share has collapsed to just 1%, with humans and livestock accounting for the rest.

Colcom Foundation uses these figures to argue that wildlife decline cannot be separated from questions of human numbers. Cleaner technology and stronger conservation law have not been enough to reverse the trend, the foundation contends, because the underlying pressure from a growing population keeps expanding faster than protective measures can compensate. The organization treats bird counts and vertebrate biomass as concrete, measurable proxies for a much larger ecological shift already underway across the country.

The foundation adds that these losses have unfolded even as public awareness of conservation issues has grown and environmental spending has increased. That combination, Colcom Foundation argues, points to a mismatch between the scale of the response and the scale of the pressure, since habitat loss driven by a larger population keeps outpacing the protections meant to offset it, year after year.
