Kelcy Warren Honored by Hart Energy, Defends Oil and Gas Future
Kelcy Warren, the billionaire executive chairman of Energy Transfer, received a Hart Energy Hall of Fame honor in December 2023 and used the recognition as an occasion to speak plainly about his views on the energy industry’s future. The Hart Energy LIVE interview captured Warren expressing both appreciation for his fellow inductees and a message to aspiring professionals that diverged sharply from mainstream energy transition narratives.
No Transition Coming, Warren Says
Kelcy Warren‘s message to younger workers in the energy sector was unambiguous. “I would say don’t believe any of this nonsense that we’re transitioning out of energy,” he said. “We’re not. That can’t happen, it’s impossible, but we are never going to run from the rhetoric. So I would say for young people, don’t buy off on that. You’re too smart.” It was a deliberate statement from a man who has spent his entire career building infrastructure that moves hydrocarbons across the country.
Warren co-founded Energy Transfer, which has grown into one of the largest midstream companies in the United States. The company’s pipeline network stretches more than 90,000 miles and serves 38 states, moving natural gas, crude oil, natural gas liquids, and refined products from production basins to end markets. Energy Transfer also owns Sunoco LP, and its operations include some of the largest terminalling and storage facilities along the Gulf Coast.
Warren’s personal history runs parallel to the story of American energy. He grew up the son of a man who worked pipeline jobs in East Texas, and he built his career through a series of midstream companies before co-founding Energy Transfer in the mid-1990s. He received his civil engineering degree from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1978.
The Hart Energy Hall of Fame induction was a fitting recognition for Kelcy Warren, whose influence over pipeline infrastructure policy and development has been substantial. His comments at the ceremony reflected a worldview shaped by decades of building and operating the systems that move American energy. See related link for more information.
